The Beauty of Linen

The Beauty of Linen

Why I love this natural, timeless fabric.

I've always loved natural materials, and linen is my absolute favourite. There's something about its texture, the way it feels and how effortlessly it fits into almost any setting.

But there's much more to linen than its appearance.

From Flax to Fabric

Linen begins as a plant. More specifically, the flax plant, which produces the natural fibres used to make linen fabric.

Once harvested, the flax goes through several stages before it becomes the linen we recognise. The fibres are separated from the stalks, prepared, spun into yarn and eventually woven into fabric.

It's quite a process, and one that gives me an appreciation for the finished product.

What Makes French Linen Special?

France is renowned for producing high-quality flax, particularly in its northern regions, where the mild, damp climate provides ideal growing conditions. The combination of favourable weather, fertile soils and generations of farming expertise helps produce flax with long, strong fibres, highly valued in fine linen production.

While the quality of the finished fabric also depends on how it's spun, woven and finished, French flax has earned its reputation as a sought-after material.

Why Choose Linen?

One of the things I appreciate most about linen is its durability. With proper care, good-quality linen can last for years, becoming softer and more comfortable with use. I love the idea of investing in beautiful, practical pieces that can be enjoyed time and again, rather than things that need replacing after a short time.

Linen is also wonderfully comfortable against the skin and doesn't cling to the body. Its natural fibres allow air to circulate, helping the body release heat rather than trapping it against the skin. It provides a fresh, comfortable feel, whether you're relaxing at home, enjoying a warm afternoon outdoors or wrapping yourself in a throw as the evening cools.

And then there are the creases!

Unlike fabrics that need to be perfectly pressed, linen looks beautiful with its natural wrinkles. I think that's part of its charm. It has a relaxed, effortless appearance that doesn't require much fuss.

Linen isn't just for the home.

We often think of linen in terms of clothing, bedding and tablecloths.  I have enjoyed the luxury of linen bedsheets for years, but I love the idea of taking it outdoors.

A beautiful linen throw is just as useful for a picnic in the garden as it is draped over a lounge or thrown in the car for a road trip.

It's practical, easy to pack and doesn't need to be kept for special occasions.

Made to Be Used

I think there's something lovely about owning fewer things that you really enjoy using.

When choosing pieces for Wild Lodge, I want products that people will genuinely use and enjoy, rather than things that would spend most of their time tucked away in a cupboard.

That's why I designed our Marlow Throw, made from 100% French linen. I love its generous size, beautiful weight and natural texture. It's a simple piece, but one that can be used in so many different ways.

It's not a fabric that needs to be treated as precious. It's meant to be washed, used, softened and enjoyed.

However you use it, good linen has a way of becoming a favourite.

And that's exactly the kind of product I love to include at Wild Lodge.
